IO Editorial Café: Call for Papers

International Organization’s editorial team is happy to announce the first IO editorial café during the 2018 annual meetings of the International Studies Association in San Francisco.

Purpose: The editors and members of the editorial board of International Organization will give feedback on selected papers with the goal of helping authors prepare their work for submission to IO. The goal is to make this type of advice more widely available than it typically is. We hope to provide both specific advice to authors and general advice to other attendees about preparing work for publication in IO. We also hope to make IO’s review process more transparent. There is, obviously, no guarantee or expectation that these papers will eventually be submitted to IO or published in IO.

Format: Each editor or board member is paired with two or three papers in a café format. This means that we will sit informally at tables rather than in a panel set-up. The conversations are accessible for all ISA participants who would like to listen in and potentially contribute. Cambridge University Press has graciously agreed to sponsor the event and provide coffee and refreshments.

Eligibility: Papers that have already been submitted to IO are ineligible. But papers accepted to the ISA conference in another capacity are eligible.  We will prioritize papers from authors who have never previously published in IO, who have limited access to editorial board members at their home institutions, and/or who come from demographic groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in IO.

Participants include Erik Voeten (Georgetown, IO editor), Kenneth A. Schultz (Stanford University, IO associate editor), Kenneth Scheve (Stanford University, IO associate editor), David A. Lake (University of California San Diego),  Virginia Page Fortna (Columbia University), and Kathryn Sikkink (Harvard Kennedy School ). Depending on the number of applications, we may add more board members.

Time and location: Imperial A room, Hilton San Francisco Union Square Hotel on Saturday April 7th, from 8:15 to 10:00 am. If your paper is selected, you are expected to attend the café.  Selection for the IO Editorial Café does not count toward ISA program appearances, and the names of authors will not appear in the program. Unfortunately, IO is unable to provide any travel funding to the conference.

How to submit: Please submit a CV, paper abstract, and draft paper (if available) by January 31st 2018. If you do not yet have a full draft paper, please make the abstract a bit longer to explain what the paper is about. Co-authored papers should be submitted only once but multiple authors can attend. We will inform you by February 15th, 2018 whether your proposal has been accepted. Submissions can be entered here.
